‚Where Art You‘ Tour
In this document you will find exercises (which you will together with your partner), hints and clues. During the walk today you will need to find the answers to these exercises. The tasks and this booklet in general, will be used during the duration of this period (the whole process).
We will start at the back of the Bonnefantenmuseum (the Meuseriver side). Here you will receive this little booklet. The walk will take up to 1,5-2 hours. During the walk you will look for a business card from the artist of Touristclothing. In the attachment you will find the images of the item you will be searching. If you found this card, the back will tell you what you have won!
To properly work on this assignment, it is of utmost importance to carefully watch your environment, for things like small statues that catch your eye. If you find something (or something finds you) please do make pictures, draw and write a description because this will be the key to the next period.
You have made groups of no more than 2 people and you guys will start at the same location, don’t follow other groups blindly because you might have a different route.
- Route 1 -> Sint Servaas Brug
- Route 2 -> Hoge Brug
Exercise 1: Ask yourself an authentic question, something personal and only for you. An exemplary question COULD be:
- What if you were able to change the weather?
- What if dragons were real?
- What if the earth wouldn’t have gravitation?
- If you could hear the thoughts of someone, what would you do with it?
- WHAT IF YOU CAME FROM A DIFFERENT PLANET, HAD 20 THIN FINGERS PER HAND (WITH WHOM YOU COULD DO EVERYTHING) AND YOU WOULDN’T BE ABLE TO SPEAK THIS LANGUAGE?? HOW WOULD YOU THEN (…)
Please mark that your personal question doesn’t have anything to do with art!
You will write down the question BEFORE you start this walk!
Your personal question is:
Could I be content with a normal, boring life?
During the walk you will see all kinds of artworks like sculptures, relief, murals, image-poems, etc…
There will be ONE artwork that chooses you! This artwork is of utter importance for your research during this period. After this walk you will note the title of the artwork and the name of the artist. Of course, you will later on add a picture in your workbook. (see further on)
Of course, it is impossible to see every single artwork in Maastricht during one walk but in case that an artwork hasn’t chosen you, you are allowed to create a list of artworks12of Maastricht. In the workbook part 2 you will get additional information about the exercises surrounding the artwork.
Please mind that one of the lists has quite the personal opinions about the pieces of art, so this is not objective, and I do ask you to make up your own mind about the pieces of art

_ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ _ Q _ _ was absolutely no success, can you explain why?
No one comes from that direction.

They both used to be factories.
The hoeg brök is an icon in Maastricht that you probably already know. The architect who did design this bridge, died at a young age and never managed to see the building finished before he died. If you had been able to change something about the “high bridge”, what would you have changed?
Make the stairs better.
Stand in the middle of this location, sketch and take picture of something in this environment that catches your eye. Don’t tell your partner the location, he/she will need to guess the location based on your drawing:

In the park you will find the right itinerary, if you follow the clues given to you. What is a Dutch “koningsboom” describe how you can recognize this. Take a picture and add in here.
The silver fence.
Slanted there is a poem, written on steel, when you find this poem you will know where to go. You will follow the path to the left over the pond. Where is this poem written on steel? Can you read it? Who wrote this poem?
___________________________________________________________________________
Take a picture of the Poem and continue towards the TRUE GATE
(place the picture on the right)
The gate you can see on the left is built around 1887-1888, and you can notice older architectural style elements.
What is name of this gate?
Which architectural style elements can you link back to the gate?
- Romanesque

Go through the gate and take the first path on the left after the gate (molenhofpad) continue to walk, and search there were the birds sing and the animals graze, there were the people dare to taunt geese and ducks. Continue the path towards the Tapijnkazerne
Draw on the map the rout you have walked in the park so far.
In the Tapijnkazerne area is a building called “Het Werkgebouw”, How many companies does this building hold?
9
If you found your way towards the Tapijnkazerne the next step is to (bear with me) find a certain sculpture seated on a bench. He looks sad and might correlate to the artwork called “halfautomatische troostmachine” by Michel Huisman. Find the sculpture and sketch this.
Afterwards go to the giraffe and the continuation of the sculpture.
What is the relation between both parts of this sculpture?
The bear is said that the giraffe is dead
How many animals can be found in (near) this piece of art, can you mention a few of these animals?
Monkey tasmaanse buidelwolf trekduif. 14 animals

“Pardon me,” said he, smiling, “pardon me my dear compatriot, but I had wholly forgotten you. But what help is there for it! A captain is nothing but a father of a family, charged with even a greater responsibility than the father of an ordinary family. Soldiers are big children; but as I maintain that the orders of the king, and more particularly the orders of the cardinal, should be executed–”
Charles Debatz-Castelmore could not restrain a smile. By this smile M. de Treville judged that he had not to deal with a fool, and changing the conversation, came straight to the point.
“I respected your father very much,” said he. “What can I do for the son? Tell me quickly; my time is not my own.”
In this small passage from a book is a name fully written, from what book is this excerpt? By what name is this person better known?

Vanessa looked over her shoulder, she had walked for quite a while now and the city slowly seemed to get smaller.Ridges of the carts crossing her path were marked on the dry and dusty dirt roads. In every city she had been the streets had been filthy, she had observed over the years, she much more preferred these dusty and dry dirt roads. Juggling her many bags on her shoulders she trudged on. The last hour or so she had felt more and more sluggish. Hours of walking would do that to you, not that she could stop, she had to keep on going before they noticed she was gone. One wrong move, one wrong person noticing her and she might be in a heap of trouble. Fear was slowly growing with every step that she took.

What location in the centre of Maastricht are you looking for, and how did you find it?
Vrijthof coloured letters. It was obvious.
The location you figured out just now, has art pieces that are sometimes hard and sometimes easy to find. There is a procession with the name ‘t zaat hermieneke, 1993, made by Han van Wetering.
Find this procession, take a picture of a particular detail and sketch this in detail.
What material was used to make this piece of art?

Find this procession, take a picture of a particular detail and sketch this in detail.
